IHT threat sees popularity of annuities rise

24-06-2026

Wealth planners report a surge in inquiries from families concerned about new inheritance tax rules effective from April 2027. Pensions will be subject to inheritance tax for the first time, with potential rates reaching 40% on amounts exceeding allowances. Experts suggest using annuities to pass on pension wealth tax-free. Clare Moffat from Royal London said a joint annuity "could be a really good idea" for partners while others say a policy could be used for grown-up children too. The popularity of annuities is expected to rise, with 39% of advisers anticipating increased interest due to these changes.
